Kate Hogan State House Advocacy is core to Children's Melanoma Prevention Foundation's (CMPF) mission to prevent skin cancer. Since the beginning, CMPF has always been involved in community advocacy but more recently we have focused our efforts on advocating for laws that protect children from sun damage and indoor tanning. Maura Flynn, a dermatology nurse specialist, is our Advocacy Coordinator and spearheads these efforts and coordinates our activities. In 2016, CMPF successfully advocated for an indoor tanning ban for minors in Massachusetts. Advocacy highlights also include spearheading a resolution to declare May as Skin Cancer Awareness & Detection month and signing on to the Sunucate bill to allow children to bring sunscreen to school in Massachusetts. CMPF was recognized by the National Council for Skin Cancer Prevention for being the first organization in the nation to petition our governor to proclaim Don’t Fry Day, a national day of skin cancer awareness. CMPF has received multiple citations from state representatives, as well as the Massachusetts Non-profit Network for our efforts in advocacy and education. In 2018, the American Nurses Association (MA) recognized Maryellen Maguire-Eisen with their Community Service Award.
