SunAWARE programs are presented in schools, the community and at professional meetings. Trained SunAWARE Educators book classes and deliver programs locally and nationally. Administrators, teachers, school nurses, parents, coaches, and others assist in these bookings. Ninety percent of schools rebook each year and teacher evaluations are outstanding. Please help us by booking a SunAWARE program and join our growing list of participating schools and community partners.

Maura TeachingEducating children about sun protection and skin cancer prevention is vitally important because sun damage occurs most commonly in childhood and is directly linked to skin cancer in adulthood. Despite the myriad of sun protection products available, 50% of children in the U.S. still suffer a sunburn annually. We firmly believe that this health hazard can be greatly reduced through education and awareness programs tailor-made for school age children. Research findings indicate that the most effective place to teach children about health promotion or disease prevention is in the school environment. This is why we bring our SunAWARE for Life School Program, directly to the students. We created our SunAWARE Curriculum to align with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and national educational standards. There are four discrete curriculum levels; K-2, 3-5, 6-9, 9-12. Each year our trained SunAWARE Educators teach thousands of school children, from kindergarten through high school, how to safely enjoy the outdoors. Each lesson is designed to be fun and informative, age appropriate, with cross-curricular content relevant to each grade level. Our objectives are simple, to provide students with a better understanding of the factors that affect UV intensity and skin sensitivity, as well as proper sun protection and skin cancer recognition. We reach equal numbers of students in elementary, middle, and high school each year. Positive feedback from teacher and student evaluations yield an impressive rebook rate of 90% annually. The program is free-of-charge and programs include classroom teaching, assemblies, health fairs, faculty and parent presentations, and much more. Preventing skin cancer one child at a time is our ultimate goal! UV Video young boysAfter school, weekends, and all summer long, our staff is in the community teaching children about sun protection. We reach children in sailing centers, at beaches, at girl scout meetings, on Boston Harbor Islands, at camps, and anywhere else that they are playing or enjoying the great outdoors. We bring sunscreen and our UV video camera into the community to provide valuable lessons about sun damage and proper sunscreen application. Everything we do and everywhere we go our aim is to educate children in a fun and informative way. “Your program at the chapter meeting of the MA Association of Public Health Nurses was informative and very relevant. You have a great program and team!”
Kathy Whittaker, Southeast Chapter Public Health Nurses, Massachusetts
CHNA20As an oncology nurse for nearly forty years, Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, founder and executive director, has actively recruited nursing colleagues and organizations to share in the mission to prevent skin cancer. Dermatology, public health, school, and oncology nurses have all worked with CMPF to spread the word about the importance of skin cancer prevention for children. The Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) led the way by endorsing our SunAWARE acronym in 2007 and our SunAWARE Curriculum in 2016. They partnered on a cross-country fundraiser, Ride4Melanoma where DNA members along with CMPF volunteers shared sun protection information, resources, and sunscreen. DNA partnered on the electronic publication, What Are these Spots on My Skin? that is available for free download.

CMPF has partnered with local public health nurses on educational grants, provided by the Blue Hills Community Health Alliance #20, to provide melanoma prevention education. We featured our anti-tanning video, Glenna’s Gift, at two American Public Health Association conventions to raise awareness about the relationship of indoor tanning and melanoma. In addition, CMPF has provided local workshops for school and oncology nurses, as well as published multiple peer-reviewed articles in the nursing literature.

We actively seek other professionals working in children’s athletics, recreation, and summer camps. For example, CMPF partnered with US SAILING in their SunAWARE at Sea Program providing presentations and resources for administrators, instructors, coaches, and boaters. More recently, we partnered with the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to provide programs, educational resources, and sunscreen to Boston Harbor Island staff, visitors and campers.
